Take SHEIN for example. Yes, I know it’s a super dodgy brand - but before you judge, find me a righteous company that sells decent, reasonably-priced plus size clothing without slapping on designs that scream “my 96 year old Nan wouldn’t even wear this”.
(Yes, I’m talking about the incessant skulls, butterflies, and floral prints. URGH. 💀🦋💐)
Every. Single. Email. I get from SHEIN is a sales pitch. Value? None. Education? Zero. Entertainment? 0%.
Just pure, unadulterated “buy this now”.
Do I get annoyed at too much selling? Of course not. I didn’t think about it for more than a split second.
In our industry, ‘selling too much’ is so taboo. It’s actually absurd - global brands like SHEIN are blowing up inboxes like there's no tomorrow, and it's business as usual. But for us?
God forbid you actually ask folks to pay you for your expertise. 😂
Now I’m not about to tell you to go and send three emails per day to your mailing list.
But what I am going to tell you to do is to stop worrying so damn much about whether you’re selling too much!
If you said ‘yes’ to any of those questions, then you NEED to be okay with the fact that there will be *some* people who still think that 1 or 2 emails a week is ‘too much’ - even if you’re not selling in all of them.
To that, I say “tough sh*t” 😊💩
As long as you’re giving your readers something of value (and this can be either educational or entertaining, or both), then contact them whenever you feel like it.
People will unfollow and unsubscribe anyway and this is a good thing; it’s clearing space for the people who WANT to hear from you and improves your engagement levels and open rates.
The most financially successful people in this industry are successful BECAUSE they sell to their audience frequently - AND they also have lots of people who think “urgh they sell too much”.
Do they care? Of course they don't.
So ponder on that.
And now go and make a sale.
Bonus points if you educate and entertain your audience at the same time. 👏
